According to Levels.fyi, the median software engineer in Indonesia earns IDR 224.7 million a year in total compensation. That is about $12,665 at Bank Indonesia's reference rate, against a US median wage of $135,980 reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Developer Salaries in Indonesia

The figures below are total annual compensation from Levels.fyi, based on 351 salary submissions, converted at the JISDOR rate of Rp17,745 per US dollar on 18 September 2026.

Two cautions apply. Levels.fyi data leans toward tech companies and self-reported offers, so salaries at smaller firms and outside Jakarta are often lower. And a salary is not a rate: an agency or partner price also covers project management, QA, design, tools, office costs, taxes, and margin.

A Talent Pool That Keeps Growing

GitHub's Octoverse 2025 report names Indonesia, alongside India and Brazil, as one of the countries that more than quadrupled its number of developers on the platform between 2020 and 2025. The same report says Indonesia entered the top 5 countries for open source contributors.

In practice this means a deep bench of developers who work daily with the same stacks you use: JavaScript and TypeScript, React and Next.js, Node.js, and cloud platforms such as AWS. It also means experience varies widely, so vetting matters more than geography.

English Skills and Communication

This is the risk buyers most often underestimate. The EF English Proficiency Index 2025 ranks Indonesia 80th with a score of 471, in the "low" band. Speaking is the weakest skill at 447, while reading scores 491.

The average hides large regional gaps. EF reports Jakarta at 523 and Surabaya at 519, while the Sumatra region averages 462. Developers who work with international clients are usually far stronger than these averages, but you should confirm it rather than assume it.

• Test written English in the interview. Most day-to-day collaboration happens in tickets, pull requests, and chat, so written clarity matters more than accent.
• Ask for a written weekly update during the trial period and judge how clearly it explains blockers.

Time Zone Overlap With Your Team

Most Indonesian software teams work on Western Indonesia Time (WIB), which is UTC+7 all year because Indonesia does not use daylight saving time. That includes Jakarta and Bandar Lampung. The overlap you get depends on where you are:

Data Protection and Contracts

Indonesia now has a comprehensive privacy law. According to DLA Piper, Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection was enacted on 17 October 2022, and full compliance became mandatory on 17 October 2024. Controllers must report a personal data breach within 72 hours.

The same source notes that, as of 13 February 2026, the implementing regulation was still at the harmonization stage and the dedicated data protection agency had not yet been established. Treat the law as binding and plan for enforcement to tighten.

• Source code and credentials handover: repositories, cloud accounts, and domains registered under your organization, not the vendor's.
• Data handling: which personal data the team can access, where it is stored, and who is notified within 72 hours if something goes wrong.
• Governing law and dispute venue, agreed before work starts.
• Exit terms: what happens to the code and the servers if you end the contract early.

How to Vet an Indonesian Partner
